Last night, the EGBC Women in Engineering and Geoscience division hosted its last event to commemorate the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre. Division volunteers who contributed to advancing and retenting women in the profession over the past 30+ years came to support. The work from this division will be transitioned to a working group that will focus on equity-deserving groups and the intersections between them. In one month, December 6th will mark 34 years since the tragic event when 14 women from l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were killed in an act of gender-based violence. This day is now designated as Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The EGBC Women in Engineering and Geoscience Division (WIEG) will be commemorating by hosting a memorial to remember each individual who was lost to this tragic act of violent misogyny. Guest speaker Michelle. Mahovlich P.Eng., P.Geo.FCSSE (the new EGBC Board Chair!) will be sharing her reflections on the impact that this tragedy has on her professional life. The conference and AGM are over! As an introvert, networking and public speaking at a conference can seem daunting. Over the years, with lots of practice, I became more at ease to do so. I learned a lot during this conference. I really enjoyed being the stream coordinator and continuing education session facilitator for the technical learning stream. It was also wonderful to rekindle connections and to forge new ones. Time to recharge!
